Therapy is a unique medical experience. Unlike traditional medicine, a therapist can't prescribe medication that will remove your symptoms. (That's what a psychiatrist or medical doctor does). A therapist's job is to help unravel a lifetime's worth of experiences and how they have changed you. Then work with you to develop a plan on how to make the necessary changes so that you will have a better life.

Amazingly, it actually works!!!

So what does a typical session look like?

The best way to explain it is as a guided conversation. You come to therapy for help with a specific problem. Your therapist is going to help you with that problem by asking questions to understand how that problem is affecting you and guide the conversation so that you are receiving the best care. It may feel like you are "just talking" at first but as the conversation develops over sessions you will begin to see the same patterns your therapist does.

Your therapist will provide different ways of dealing with your particular problem and you will experiment with what works best for you and what doesn't. Therapy is a growing process. Not only because your goal is to grow but because it grows and shapes over time.

Therapy is a unique medical experience because you have a more active role in it. It isn't the act of taking medication, it isn't following doctor's orders, but it is a combined effort to help you achieve the goals and changes that you want.

Therapy is the best kind of medical relationship. One where you work with the expert to get better instead of being the one who has no say.
