What is Counseling?
Counseling is a unique medical intervention. Instead of a Doctor providing a prescription or telling you what to do, Counseling is a team dynamic. Counselors don’t tell you what to do or give you their opinions of situations, they help you learn how to approach problems in different ways.
Sometimes that looks like providing education to help you understand why you feel the way you do. Sometimes that looks like helping you learn to do different things to change something about yourself. And, sometimes that looks like listening to you explain something very painful.
Counseling is all about helping you solve a difficult problem.
That problem could be that I feel bad about me all the time, or that I fall apart if I leave my home, or that I am angry all the time, it even could be that I can’t sleep at night. The problems people experience are as many as there are people.
A typical counseling session looks like this:
You meet with the counselor.
The two of you catch up on recent events in your life.
The counselor will often ask if there is anything that you would like to discuss.
Then there will be a discussion related to anything that you have brought or something the counselor believes will be of importance to you.
The session will end after the discussion is completed.
Every session has its’ own nuance and specialty, but, generally, you can expect it to look something like this.
Counseling provides a unique method of understanding yourself, the problems that you are facing, and learning how to better overcome those problems.
